卷板机按照工作状况分为：冷卷和热卷两种。工作能力是指板材在冷态下，按规定的屈服极限卷制最大板材厚度与宽度时最小卷筒直径的能力。当卷制板厚较大或弯曲半径较小并超过设备工作能力时，在设备允许的前提下可采用热卷的方法。个别不允许冷卷的板材，热卷刚性太差，则采用温卷的方法。
